Telephone Poles

9/1/2010

College and Ashby
PG&E recently replaced several telephone poles on College Avenue.  It was quite a production.  First the old poles were sawed off in less crucial places, leaving the wires in place.  The next day, a new pole was placed tandem to the remains of the old pole.  Eventually the wires were transferred and the dregs of the old pole removed.  I was pleased to see that telephone poles are still worth replacing! Not all wires are going underground just yet.  The poles and the wires create interesting lines in the landscape.  It's as if someone took a pencil and drew them in.  Except that birds are sitting on the wires.  And trees are pruned in quite clumsy shapes around them.  Well, thanks for the telephone poles.

I agree, telephone poles and their -sometimes messy- wires add characteristics and an interesting personality to Bay Area streets. They might look dated if you compare their appearance with the clean look of European countries where wires are covered underground but especially in your paintings they are so charming ... love it!
